The monastery of Holy Mary Eikonistria the patron saint of Skiathos is a small paradise on earth. The monastery was founded during 17th century a.c. when the hagiography of Holy Mary was found hanging from a tree close to the area where the church is located today. Skiathos celebrates Virgin Mary as the island's protector every year at the 21st of November with a religious festival where people walk all the way up to the monastery barefoot carrying her hagiography in order to have a service in her honour. During the summer, tourists and locals visit the monastery to see the beautiful scenery and pay their respects t the Saints. The church's servant is the lovely old lady Argyroula, who lives there and takes care of the place all year round. She always welcomes people with a smile and a warm heart and asks for visitors to respect the holy place and the area around. Lastly, the trip to the monastery is also a good chance to visit the dogs' shelter which is located right next to it!
