Ναι, υπάρχει και αυτή η μέρα του έτους! Η Διεθνής Ημέρα Φώκιας είναι σήμερα, 22 Μαρτίου! Μάλιστα, φέτος η μέρα αυτή σημαδεύεται από ένα εξαιρετικό νέο για τη «δική» μας φώκια. Μια μεσογειακή φώκια λοιπόν παρατηρήθηκε και φωτογραφήθηκε στη νότια Κροατία, στην περιοχή του Mljet National Park. Η Monachus monachus επανεμφανίζεται εκεί μετά από 40 ολόκληρα χρόνια απουσίας, γεγονός που επιβεβαιώνει την ανάκαμψη του είδους στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο με επίκεντρο την Ελλάδα και υπογραμμίζει την σπουδαιότητα του Eastern Adriatic Monk Seal Project (https://adriaticmonkseal.org/) που πραγματοποιεί στην περιοχή η MOm σε συνεργασία με την EuroNatur και τοπικές περιβαλλοντικές οργανώσεις της Αλβανίας (PPNEA), του Μαυροβουνίου (CZIP) και Κροατίας (BIOM), με τη χρηματοδότηση του Monk Seal Alliance. Tην ιστορικής σημασίας παρατήρηση και φωτογραφία έκαναν ο βιολόγος Luka Jurinović και φύλακας του Mljet National Park, Davor Stražičić, κατά τη διάρκεια καταμέτρησης θαλασσοπουλιών!

Yes, the International Day of the Seal is today, March 22nd! As a matter of fact, this day is accompanied by amazing news for “our” seal. A Mediterranean monk seal was spotted and photographed in southern Croatia, in the area of the Mljet National Park. A Monachus monachus reappears there after 40 whole years of absence, a fact that confirms the recovery of the species in the Eastern Mediterranean with its epicenter around Greece, and underlines the importance of the Eastern Adriatic Monk Seal Project (https://adriaticmonkseal.org/) that MOm participates in along with the EuroNatur and local environmental organizations of Albania (PPNEA), Montenegro (CZIP) and Croatia (BIOM), which is funded by the Monk Seal Alliance. The historically important observation and picture were recorded by the biologist Luka Jurinović and the guard of the Mljet National Park, Davor Stražičić, while counting seabird populations!
