Before the traditional carnival of the island is transformed and mutated, like almost everywhere else, under the framework of globalization there existed a pure folk tradition interwoven with the dominant sounds of the people within the songs, the dancing and the partying.
All of Skiathos was on the move. During the day the dancing took place. Young girls and women wore the local traditional clothing. Dancing and singing the endless songs of love where one person would sing the beginning and all would follow. In the evening at the local taverns, the more devoted would drink xerosfyri until they felt comfortable enough to sing the traditional songs.
All the houses were open to welcome the "mouchounous", the locals who would dress-up not to be recognized. It was difficult to identify who it was and the guessing would become a game The grilled meat would emit fragrant aromas before the forty day lent period. In many houses they would make traditional soups to treat their guests or passerby. The local wine was plentiful and would flow everywhere.
The alleys were full of musical instruments playing love songs, glorifying life and exiling the Angel of Death. From the many songs I collected as a child from the old grandmothers, I dedicate the following which can also apply to our modern times:
"What kind of world is this, What bullet is this Where love does not win But only riches!"
